At every level, Coquitlam’s Sara Maglio proved pitch-perfect in the sport of soccer. Internationally, the Centennial Secondary alum wore the Maple Leaf as a member of both the under-20 and senior women’s national teams. At 19, she made her international debut playing for Canada at the US Cup tournament, and was a member of the national women’s team that competed at the 1999 FIFA World Cup. During a four-year span with the national program, Maglio earned five caps.

At Simon Fraser University, the stylish striker set a high bar by being named an NAIA All-American for four straight years. That stretch also saw SFU win the 1996 NAIA title in her freshman year, while leading the team in scoring. Competing in three NAIA finals over that time, Maglio earned two tourney all-star awards, and in ’99 was picked to play in the Senior Bowl. She was a big part of the Vancouver Whitecaps squad for four years, including the inaugural W-League champs, which were inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame. On the provincial scene, Maglio played with the Surrey United women’s team that won four provincial titles.

She remains dedicated and involved in her hometown, as executive director with the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club.
