Coquitlam-raised Mike Mahovlich made his mark on the national and international stage, beginning at the age of 11 when he set the age group (1972) world record in javelin. Mahovlich’s talents earned him a scholarship at the University of Washington, where as a freshman he earned All-American status at the 1979 NCAA championships with a seventh place result.
An injury kept him off the 1984 Olympic team, after throwing a qualifying distance. At the 1986 Commonwealth Games, he’d finish fifth, after winning the America’s Cup. Mahovlich set a new Canadian record with the new javelin the same year. He’d represent Canada at the 1987 world championships and won 22 meets en route to the ’88 Summer Olympics in Seoul. At the 1987 Pan American Games, he finished fifth overall.
Mahovlich’s international career spanned three decades and more than 250 national and international javelin competitions.
