As a team, the Coquitlam Soccer Club women who ventured to Winnipeg for the Thanksgiving weekend in 1987 packed lightly.

It returned with the biggest haul of all, becoming the first B.C. club to win the Jubilee national women’s soccer championship.

A month after beating James Bay 4-2 in the B.C. final, they entered the fifth annual Jubilee tourney with high expectations. B.C.’s champs got on a roll, blanking Nova Scotia 2-0 to advance to the semifinals, where they edged Quebec 1-0 on Jenny Hafting’s strike.

In a gold medal final against Oakville, B.C. battled the Ontario side to a 2-2 tie after 90 minutes, with Hafting and Lisa Beaton supplying the offence. The game came down to penalty kicks, where a clutch save by Sue Buchan and a goal from Beaton lifted B.C. to a historic win.

The team consisted of players Sue Bartlett, Lisa Beaton, Sue Buchan, Denise Duquette, April Fahlen, Rosa Guzzo, Jenny Hafting, Sheryl Kois, Liz Martinello, Linda Petrasch, Marilynn Nichols, Gaynor Preston, Stacey Reelie, Cathy Ross, Lee-Ann Small, Sue Torvik, Sheila Trautman, Bette Turner, and Leah van Husen, and was coached by Cam Barnetson.
