Bernie Pascall was one of BC sports broadcasting’s most recognizable voices and faces for three decades as BCTV’s main sports anchor.
A Coquitlam resident for 35 years, Pascall called play-by-play for the station’s Vancouver Canucks broadcasts from 1970 to ’85; was on the broadcast team that covered the first Canada Cup hockey series in 1976; was a member of the broadcast team for 10 World International Hockey championships; and covered six Olympic Games, including calling play-by-play at the legendary Lake Placid Olympics “Miracle on Ice” hockey semi-final between the U.S. and Russia.
The six-time winner of ACTRA Sports Broadcaster of the Year for Western Canada also covered various national championships, including the Canadian Football League’s Grey Cup, and, as sports anchor and director, was also an early and fervent supporter of Special Olympics athletes and community sporting events.
The BC Hockey Hall of Fame award honouring media members is named after Pascall, who is a member of that Hall along with the BC Sports Hall of Fame, BC Football Hall of Fame, Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
