Stephen Tickner has been volunteering with Coquitlam Little League for 36 years after initially pitching in to help a friend coach. Over the decades, Tickner has done a variety of jobs for the organization, including coaching for 10 years and serving as equipment manager, concession stand manager and even Coquitlam Little League president three times.
He also helped run Coquitlam’s Blastball program, which introduces young children to baseball. For years, he operated out of a cinderblock storage structure next to the batting cage at Mackin Park, where he would often arrive at 6:30 a.m. — and where that batting cage has a roof to facilitate all-weather use, a cause he championed.
Tickner also maintained artifacts of CLL’s history, hanging from the office ceiling uniforms from different eras and adorning the walls with photos and newspaper clippings about CLL teams and players. Tickner’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed: in 2021, Little League Canada honoured him with a Marthe Dubroy District Volunteer of the Year Award.
