Coquitlam got its first taste of Junior A hockey thanks to Alexander (Sandy) Michie. From 1965 to 1980, the Coquitlam resident and local businessman was owner, manager, promoter-in-chief and financier of last resort of the Coquitlam Comets.
He acquired the Comets in 1965, when they were a struggling Junior B team, then eventually upgraded the franchise to Junior A. Over his 15 years with the club, thousands of Tri-Cities residents got to enjoy Comets games at home while the team became ambassadors for the city with away games in the Fraser Valley, southern Vancouver Island and even the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
The Coquitlam Comets were also an important training ground for hundreds of aspiring young players, many of whom went on to university hockey and several of whom played at various pro levels. Besides being a force in sports, Michie was a successful entrepreneur, owning a number of companies headquartered or operated in Coquitlam, including those in construction, building supplies and manufacturing, employing hundreds of Tri-Cities residents.
