In 1984, as in recent years, it was rare for lacrosse teams from British Columbia to win national championships on Ontario soil. But the Coquitlam Adanacs Division 1A squad (formerly known as Midget, currently as U17) did just that, becoming the first minor team from B.C. to do it since 1977.
The Adanacs, led by head coach Peter Black and manager Wally Donaldson — who are both in the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame — travelled to Gloucester, Ont. along with nine other teams from across Canada to compete in the national championship tournament, including five clubs from the host province. After the first game against Edmonton, Coquitlam faced only Ontario opponents and ran the table, having to come from behind several times to claim victory. The Adanacs defeated Whitby in the semi-final, then prevailed against a highly touted Peterborough in the championship game.
It was the Coquitlam squad’s second national championship after the same group won the Division 5 (PeeWee) Canadian title in 1980 at the Pacific Coliseum.
