Brian Van Os was a softball umpire for more than 30 years, officiating many high-level provincial, national and international events during his career. Van Os officiated in four Canadian championships and supervised 16 others as an umpire-in-chief or deputy umpire-in-chief.
He was Softball BC’s umpire-in-chief from 1989 to 1997 and served on Softball Canada’s Officiating and Development Committee from 2002 to 2008, then as national director of umpires from 2008 to 2013, providing a vision for the use of technology to support education and community building initiatives. His international assignments included the 1988 WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship, the 1998 WBSC Americas Men’s Softball Qualifier and the 2001 WBSC Junior Men’s Softball World Championship in Australia.
In addition to his work umpiring games, Van Os promoted softball officiating in BC, across Canada and around the world. He was also a strong advocate for growing the number of female and junior umpires across the country. For his decades of dedication to his sport, Van Os was inducted into the Softball BC Hall of Fame in 2004 and Softball Canada Hall of Fame in 2019.
