David Norman Sr. was the ultimate mentor for thousands of players and coaches in Coquitlam soccer.

He coached youth soccer for 35 years with Bel-Air and Blue Mountain soccer clubs before co-founding Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club with Bruce Aunger, Glyn Davies and William Azzi. His teams played in 10 provincial championships, capturing six titles, and he led teams to Canadian national finals three times, winning once.

Coaching young athletes on teams and in soccer camps, his efforts guided many to university and even professional careers. By the time he passed away at the age of 70, he was sharing his passion, wisdom and magic with the children of his players from previous generations.

Through his knowledge of the game, dedication and passion, he modelled for his players a positive attitude, strong work ethic and a love for the game. They repaid him with the utmost respect — in fact, most former players, even as they reached middle age, still called him “Mr. Norman.”
